Acer founder says U.S. computer manufacturers on the road to extinction

Acer founder says U.S. computer manufacturers on the road to extinction. There was a time when U.S. car manufacturers held a leading position in the auto market. Today, U.S computer manufacturers such as Dell and HP hold a similar place in the PC market. But, according to Stan Shih, high tech entrepreneur and founder of Acer Computers, that position may be short-lived. In a recent article, Shih said that the market requires cheaper pricing and that U.S.-based companies historically just don't understand how to make that strategy a success. “The trend for low-priced computers will last for the coming years. But U.S. computer makers just don't know how to put such products on the market. U.S. computer brands may disappear over the next 20 years, just like what happened to U.S. television brands” said Shih according to the Taipei-based Commercial Times newspaper, reported AFP. While this may spell doom for U.S-based computer manufacturers, it may also serve as a wake-up call to them, and a price savings for consumers. Analyst Roger Kay of Endpoint Technologies Associates told eWeek that the remarks might implore the U.S. companies to do more to compete with other manufacturers and ensure they remain in business for the long run.
