U.S. Airways rolls out in-flight internet service on some aircraft

U.S. Airways announced Monday that Gogo in-flight internet service would be available on five of its Airbus A321 jetliners for users of laptop PCs or Wi-Fi-capable smartphones.

The airline outlined the way that their new system will work: "At 10,000 feet, U.S. Airways' flight attendants will make an announcement that passengers can enable their Wi-Fi devices. Passengers can connect to the service by turning on their laptop or mobile device, looking for and connecting to the 'gogoginflight' Wi-Fi signal, launching their web browser, creating a profile and paying for their session with a major credit card." The signal is provided via an Aircell satellite.

U.S. Airways also stated that, by June 1, all Airbus A321 airliners in its fleet will have been upgraded with the Gogo service. First-time users will be given a free session of internet when flying on U.S. Airways.

This feature - which has already been implemented on several other airlines - will enable those businesspeople who pay the fee to eliminate the productivity penalty that is generally incurred by commercial air travel, experts say.
