New Hampshire organization strives for broadband development

Network New Hampshire Now recently submitted a $66 million proposal to National Telecommunications & Information Administration's Broadband Technology Opportunities Program as part of an effort to improve broadband access in the state, according to Fosters.com.

The deal, proposed in conjunction with the University of New Hampshire, calls for a statewide broadband fiber expansion to connect businesses, schools and homes in the state. The organization believes broadband is the best way for the state to ensure economic expansion in the present and future.

“The middle-mile fiber network is seen as a major opportunity for economic development. In particular, the network designed for New Hampshire has openness as its core purpose – it will enable affordable choices for all providers to reach areas of the state that have been difficult to service,” George Bald, commissioner of the state Department of Resources & Economic Development, told the news provider.

The NTIA will carefully review the proposal and makes its decision by the end of the summer. There is no word on the likelihood of its acceptance, but the NNHN believes broadband expansion must be a priority.

Neighboring Vermont recently announced that broadband provider Comcast had finished a 1,200-mile expansion project that will improve broadband access by a considerable margin in the state, according to the Rutland Times.
