Facebook overtakes Yahoo as second most popular website

People are flocking to Facebook in increasing numbers so much so that it has recently taken over the number two spot on Compete.com's list of most visited internet sites.

January data from the company showed what it called a “changing of the guard at the top of the internet food chain,” as Facebook sped past Yahoo as the second most popular site in the United States, with 134 million unique visitors in January, according to Compete.com.

This is the first change at the front of the list since early 2008 when Google supplanted Yahoo as the most popular website, said Compete.com.

Google continues to hold the number one spot based on visits. But, the social networking aspect of Facebook has already gotten it a number one placing in Compete.com's matrix.

Over the past year, the company shows that time spent by all visitors online at Facebook grew from about 5.5 percent in January 2009 to 11.6 percent this January. At the same time, both Google and Yahoo saw there numbers shrink to 4.25 percent for Yahoo and 4.1 percent for Google in January 2010, according to Compete.com.
