Cisco: Video to drive mobile data in the future

Cisco Systems has forecast that a major component of mobile data will come from video in the coming years. According to the networking company, compound annual growth of 131 percent will mean that video could account for 66 percent of all mobile internet data by 2014. Mobile data traffic will experience a compound annual growth rate of 108 per cent over that same timeframe, Cisco said. In addition to the video growth, Cisco said that the rise in traffic will be driven by the growing popularity of web-enabled devices. The company said that there would be more than five billion personal devices connecting to mobile networks by 2014. “In spite of the economic downturn, the demand for mobile services has remained high, posing both challenges and opportunities for service providers worldwide,” said Cisco's senior director of service provider marketing, Doug Webster. A study by In-Stat last year said that smartphones alone will reach 30 percent of the global market by 2013, totaling almost 100 million units.
