Entertainment company Warner Brothers will pay one intern £17,500 to be its eyes and ears in the havens of online piracy, reporting back on the state of illegal file sharers.
A copy of the announcement found on Torrent Freak says that "duties will include … monitoring local internet forums and IRC for pirated WB and NBCU content and in order to gather information on pirate sites, pirate groups and other pirate activities … [and] finding new and maintaining existing accounts on private sites," among many other things.
The UK's Guardian newspaper says that "of course, quite a few 18-year-old geeks have downloaded an illegal Lady Gaga song here or there. And so Warner Bros' job listing doesn't make any reference to applicants' checkered or not-so-checkered pasts." The Guardian also points out that some file sharing advocates have encouraged others to apply for the position and report back on the company's anti-piracy efforts instead.
Experts say that issues of piracy and privacy are among the most important facing the regulators of the internet.
